Global Warming Has Global Effects

Most of us have heard a lot about global warming in recent years. There are numerous groups of people popping up for the purposes of studying global warming or of propagating discussion of global warming. Most of us think little more about our environment and global warming than whether the object we are holding goes in the recycle can or the trash can. The reason that global warming has taken on such a spotlight and is now being urged upon us as a daily thought is that many scientists now believe global warming has global effects that reach far beyond a minor nuisance requiring more suntan lotion.

I am not trying to speak poorly of society's efforts to be more aware of the interactions between the cultures of societies and the environment; merely I am trying to bring more awareness to the fact that global warming has global effects. One reason why this is so important is that some of the contributors to global warming are the inhabitants of earth. But, perhaps a greater reason for spreading this knowledge that global warming has global effects is the fact that there are things we can do that will counteract and possibly even reverse global warming before it becomes irreversible.

Cities are an easy example to hold up whenever we want to point out the contributions of mankind to global warming. Isn't it reasonable to assume that sitting in a running vehicle in a garage will kill you, so too will sitting in a relatively small atmosphere with more than two billion vehicles running eventually kill you? But in the mean time you will only see small side effects, likely sickly plants and gray skies over the cities. Wherever you drive, you are not only contributing carbon monoxide to the atmosphere but an array of other chemicals poisonous to nature's balance.

Some of our forms of contribution to global warming are also seen in the global effects of global warming. For example, the deforestation of the major forests of the earth has led to there being many less trees to filter and oxygenate the air. At the same time, the extra burden of polluted air on fewer trees has caused many of these trees to die. So deforestation both is a contributor to global warming and an effect of global warming. On top of this, some irresponsible groups actually burn the trees they cut down, causing additional pollution.

Other major global effects seen with correlations to global warming include the many natural disasters we see in the news, or in our own yards! For example, what used to be an occasional category 4 hurricane passing through is now a very common category 4 hurricane passing through. It might be time to start considering ways we can reverse global warming.

Energy Saving Tip
Program your heating and cooling. Install a thermostat that is programmable and is compatible with your heating and cooling system. It will help you keep your system running efficiently.

Energy Saving Tip
In the wash. A front loading washing machine is more energy efficient than a top loading one. Spend the extra dollars to get a front loading machine and enjoy the benefits, especially the one to your utility bill.

Energy Saving Tip
Lighten up. Use compact flourescent light bulbs wherever your can. They give off the same amount of light but only use about one quarter of the electricity of regular light bulbs. Plus, they last longer.

Energy Saving Tip
Air dry your dishes. Instead of using the drying cycle on your dishwasher, let your dishes air dry instead. If you are not comfortable with that, take a towel to them and dry them that way.

Energy Saving Tip
Bag it! When you go shopping, take your own paper bags or grocery bags. Many stores sell reusable grocery bags. Use these or recycle your own brown paper bags.
